Day One: Friday Feb 27th

The ONLY downside to this trip is the alarm going off at 2 am on the day of departure. You cannot hit the snooze button however much you want to. Still, I am excited to finally be heading to Quito, Ecuador. It's been 2 years since my last CAMTA mission and I am thrilled beyond words to be going again!

Pause: Thank you all for your support. There is no way I would be here if it wasn't for your financial, moral or spiritual support. So thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Within an hour the taxi arrives. I check in on the kids in lala land. I wish I could hug them but I dare not wake them. I silently beseech them to go easy on their dad in my absence. Something tells me that this is a lot to ask from them. I am fortunate that Sydney supports me 100% and is willing to step into my mommy shoes while I am away. Thanks hun!!

3 am: Off I go to the airport to meet the rest of the CAMTA team. I am on the second team this year. Lots of new faces on the team this mission. It's good to see familiar faces too. We check in the many hockey bags we are taking with us. They are packed to the brim with supplies and equipment. We sail through customs. Well sort of. It's hard to explain to US customs why we are carrying all the medical stuff. One particular customs official was skeptical and took a while to be convinced.

6:40 am: We finally take off. Sleep comes easy. The five and a half hour wait in Houston is bearable. After a two hour delay in Houston, we finally leave at 7:40 pm. Quito, here we come!

12:30 am Saturday morning: We land in Quito's brand new airport, grab our bags and board the bus to the hotel. A nice table of refreshments courtesy of the hotel is waiting for us. But food is not on my mind. All I care about is my pillow!

It's great to be part if this group of dedicated people. This is one of those rare moments of clarity where I know I am exactly where I am supposed to be at this very moment.

I'll be sending blog updates as regularly as I can so y'all can share this journey with me. :)

Much love to you all!!

Sandy.
